Supervisor’s Website Letter, #4 of 2022
Welcome back to view my October quarterly update for our Town of Massena’s Website!
To bring you up to date on some town projects, the East Massena Water Project that began on April 11th to replace the waterline is on schedule and now it all depends on the weather to see if all repair work to landscapes can be finished this year. I hear about progress with the work daily from Superintendent Frank Diagostino. In addition to that project managed by Tisdale Associates with Kubricky and Sons who are doing the work, C & S Engineers has completed the Apron Rehabilitation Project at the airport. The airport was also awarded a large federal grant for the rehabilitation of one runway for work next summer.
Linda McQuinn continues to focus on grant writing for fishing tournaments, tourism and other areas that focus on projects for Massena.
Town board members and I have continued with training and webinars through both the Office of the State Comptroller and the Association of Towns. This has been especially helpful with our budget planning sessions. Without any fund balance left, all departments have had to cut back for 2023 and their understanding has facilitated this process.
The town employees have been working on their second NYS Training; this one on Workplace Violence Prevention. When completed, each employee earns a special Certificate, and it is filed with the Town.
Additionally, any town employee or volunteer is welcome to attend a special training program in October called “Active Shooter Training” and can sign up through their department.
Senator Dan Stec is planning a visit to departments in mid-October.
Jason Hendricks has added improvements to our town and village website with his commitment to “Explore Massena” and please be sure to respond to the surveys he places. Those responses are so important as we go forward.
Given the local and national impact of Fishing, Fishing Committee members Tom Miller and Adrian Taraska have been very busy with many volunteers to help make several tournaments a big success and driver of tourism to Massena. I am still hearing positive responses from those who attended the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit TITLE championship in August. They will be back next summer. The 2022 Toyota Series went very well with over 150 fishing participants; and the early October Big Bass Blowout was a lot of fun.
Business View Magazine was received well by community members (thank you for the emails and calls) and I want to thank the following sponsors: Curran Renewable Energy, Arconic, North Country Colocation Systems, and the Massena Chamber of Commerce. We really appreciate their help in promoting Massena.
Arconic Plant Manager Eowyn Doud invited me to their plan tour in September along with several town and county officials and businesses. It was beneficial to see the plant and the process they use in manufacturing aluminum. Arconic also hosted family and friends to their 120th anniversary celebratory barbeque and picnic in August. It was well- attended, and the food and conversations were enjoyed.
The Town of Massena is excited about the new hydrogen plant that the New York State Power Authority is planning to bring to Massena. This will create both construction jobs and over 90 high paying jobs for Massena.
We are happy to have finalized the new highway 5- year contract with the Teamsters.
I attended the Town Library’s Community Non-profit Organizations event at the library. Over 29 organizations set up tables to greet the public.
I was honored to be invited to speak at the St. Lawrence Seaway kickoff celebration for the construction of the new visitors’ center at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Lock on September 29th. It was a pleasure to meet so many dignitaries from Washington D.C., NYS officials along with Seaway employees, business leaders and many county invitees.
If you would like to be added to a waiting list for any specific board or committee, to fill when a vacancy occurs, please feel free to contact me. Think about working on one of these board committees: Library, Museum, Massena Electric Dept., Planning, Zoning, Ethics, Joint Recreation, and Business Development Council.
Serving Town of Massena for a Positive Future!
